Product management has one of the widest salary ranges of any role in Indian tech. An APM at an IT services company and a Senior PM at Google India are both doing product management. They are not earning in the same universe.
The gap is not just about experience. It is about company type, path into PM, and how well you perform in the interview. That last part is the one you can actually control. Intervue.io connects you with senior PMs for one-on-one mock interviews so you know exactly what you need to fix before your actual interview. Visit intervue.io.
The Numbers by Career Stage
APM or Associate PM (0 to 2 years): ₹12 to 22 LPA at product companies and unicorns. ₹8 to 15 LPA at IT services and consulting firms. ₹25 to 40 LPA at FAANG India APM programs. The FAANG number is for campus APM programs and is not the standard entry point. Most APMs in India start in the ₹12 to 20 LPA range.
Product Manager (2 to 5 years): ₹22 to 42 LPA at product companies. ₹15 to 28 LPA at IT services. ₹35 to 55 LPA at FAANG India. This is where the company type gap becomes most visible.
Senior PM (5 to 8 years): ₹40 to 70 LPA at product companies and unicorns. ₹65 LPA to ₹1.05 Cr at FAANG India. This is the level where equity starts comprising a meaningful share of total compensation.
Group PM or Lead PM (8 to 11 years): ₹65 LPA to ₹1.1 Cr at Indian unicorns. ₹75 LPA to ₹1.3 Cr at GCCs. ₹1 to 1.6 Cr at FAANG India.
Director of Product and above: ₹1 to 2 Cr at product companies. ₹2 to 3 Cr and above at FAANG India and top-tier unicorns, with a significant equity component.
The national average across all levels sits around ₹24 LPA. That number spans everything from an IT services PM to a FAANG Group PM, which makes it almost useless as a planning reference. The level and company type matter far more than the average.
Company Type: The Single Biggest Variable
IT services companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, Capgemini) do have PM roles, but the work tends toward project management and client deliverables rather than product ownership in the traditional sense. Pay runs ₹8 to 15 LPA for junior PMs and ₹18 to 28 LPA at mid-level. If you are starting here, the plan should be to build experience and move.
Indian product companies and unicorns (Flipkart, Swiggy, Razorpay, PhonePe, CRED, Meesho, Zepto) are where most ambitious PMs in India want to be. APMs start at ₹15 to 25 LPA. PMs with 3 to 5 years earn ₹25 to 45 LPA. Senior PMs earn ₹42 to 70 LPA. Stock options and ESOPs add meaningfully at senior levels.
GCCs (Walmart Global Tech, Target India, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Deutsche Bank) sit between Indian product companies and FAANG. PM roles here often have strong international exposure and structured career progression. Mid-level PMs earn ₹30 to 52 LPA. Senior PMs earn ₹45 to 75 LPA.
FAANG India (Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta) pays the most and runs the most competitive interview process. Microsoft India PM salaries: APM ₹26 to 40 LPA, PM ₹48 to 72 LPA, Senior PM ₹80 LPA to ₹1.3 Cr. Google and Amazon are in a similar band. The interview bar at these companies is genuinely in a different category from most product companies.
How You Get Into PM Changes Your Starting Salary
There are two main paths into product management in India and they start at different salary points.
The APM program route (campus, direct from engineering or MBA, structured hiring) typically gets you into product companies and FAANG at ₹15 to 40 LPA depending on the company. These programs are competitive and involve structured PM-specific interviews.
The PM transition route (engineering to PM, business analyst to PM, consultant to PM) typically means entering at a slight discount relative to someone who came in through an APM program, but with faster growth once you establish your PM track record. Engineer-to-PM transitions at product companies typically enter at the same role level with a ₹6 to 10 LPA bump over their engineering salary.
MBA-to-PM is the third route. Fresh MBA grads from IIM-A, IIM-B, IIM-C, or ISB entering PM roles at product companies start at ₹25 to 40 LPA. The brand of the school matters more here than in most other roles.
What the Monthly Take-Home Looks Like
At ₹15 LPA: roughly ₹95,000 to 1 lakh per month.At ₹28 LPA: roughly ₹1.7 to 1.8 lakh per month.At ₹45 LPA: roughly ₹2.6 to 2.75 lakh per month.At ₹80 LPA: roughly ₹4.4 to 4.6 lakh per month.
At senior levels in product companies, a significant part of total compensation is in ESOPs and RSUs that vest over 3 to 4 years. Base salary at Senior PM level might be ₹50 to 60% of total CTC at FAANG India.
Industry Premiums That Are Real
Fintech and e-commerce PMs earn a 15 to 20% premium over PMs in equivalent roles at enterprise software or IT services companies. The reasoning is straightforward: the stakes of product decisions are higher and the iteration cycles are faster.
SaaS PMs with B2B product experience are in strong demand from GCCs and global product companies. Pay runs 10 to 15% above the general product company range.
AI product management is the fastest-growing premium right now. PMs who have shipped AI-powered features, worked with LLM-based products, or understand the data requirements of ML systems are commanding 20 to 30% above market at companies building AI products.
The PM Interview Is What Decides Your Range
PM interviews are different from engineering interviews. There is no coding round. But there is a product design round, a metrics and analytics round, a strategy or prioritization round, and usually a behavioral round. All of them require you to perform under conditions most candidates have never practiced.
Product design questions ("design a product for X") require you to frame the user problem clearly before proposing solutions, something most candidates rush past. Metrics questions require you to know which numbers matter and why, not just that metrics exist. Prioritization frameworks need to connect to real trade-offs, not just reproduce the RICE framework.
The candidates who land at the top of the salary range for their target company are the ones who have practiced these rounds with real feedback before the actual interview.
At Intervue.io, PM mock interviews are one-on-one with experienced product managers who give you specific, actionable feedback on your product thinking, your metrics reasoning, and your communication.
