DevOps is one of the better-paying engineering tracks in India right now. The median salary across all experience levels sits around ₹9 to 10 LPA on platforms like Glassdoor and Indeed. That number is pulled down by IT services roles at the bottom. At FAANG and product companies, mid-level DevOps engineers earn three to four times that.
If you are preparing to interview for a DevOps role, Intervue.io connects you with experienced DevOps engineers for one-on-one mock interviews. You get real scenarios, real feedback, and a clear picture of where you need to improve before it counts. Visit intervue.io.
The Numbers by Experience Level
Fresher (0 to 2 years): ₹3.5 to 5.5 LPA at IT services companies. ₹6 to 10 LPA at mid-tier product companies and startups. ₹9 to 16 LPA at Indian unicorns. ₹12 to 20 LPA at GCCs. These ranges assume a candidate with some hands-on exposure to Docker, Linux, and at least one cloud platform. Freshers who come in with only theoretical knowledge tend to land at the lower end.
Early career (2 to 4 years): ₹12 to 22 LPA at product companies. ₹16 to 28 LPA for SRE roles. The jump from fresher to this level depends almost entirely on how much you have actually operated production systems versus helping senior engineers operate them.
Mid-level (5 to 7 years): ₹22 to 38 LPA at product companies. ₹30 to 50 LPA at GCCs and FAANG. SRE-tracked engineers at this level earn ₹30 to 55 LPA. Platform engineers are in a similar band. This is where company type starts making the biggest difference.
Senior (8 to 11 years): ₹38 to 65 LPA at top product companies. ₹55 to 90 LPA at FAANG India. Senior SREs at Google or Amazon India report salaries in the ₹70 to 90 LPA range including variable pay.
Lead and Staff level (12+ years): ₹65 LPA to ₹1.1 Cr for DevOps leads. Staff SRE and Principal Platform Engineer roles push ₹95 LPA to ₹1.8 Cr at top companies.
Company Type Changes Everything
IT services companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, Capgemini, HCLTech) hire large DevOps teams but the pay scale reflects the services model. Freshers start at ₹3.5 to 5.5 LPA. Five-year engineers earn ₹10 to 16 LPA. Senior engineers push ₹18 to 26 LPA. The work tends toward client environment management and migration projects. The ceiling is real and the growth slows at senior level.
Product companies and unicorns (Flipkart, Swiggy, Zomato, Razorpay, PhonePe, CRED, Meesho) pay significantly more and the work is more interesting. Mid-level engineers earn ₹20 to 38 LPA. Senior engineers earn ₹35 to 60 LPA. These are roles where you are building and running infrastructure at genuine scale, not managing vendor environments.
GCCs (Walmart Global Tech, Target India, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Deutsche Bank, Wells Fargo) sit between product companies and FAANG on pay. Mid-level earns ₹22 to 45 LPA. Senior earns ₹40 to 70 LPA. Good work-life balance reputation compared to the pace at pure product companies.
FAANG India (Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Apple India) pays the most and asks the most. Mid-level DevOps and SRE engineers earn ₹35 to 60 LPA. Senior engineers earn ₹55 to 90 LPA. Staff-level roles go above ₹1 Cr. Amazon and Google are the two biggest employers for SRE and platform engineering at this pay tier in India.
City Makes a Difference
Bengaluru leads. Mid-level DevOps engineers in Bengaluru earn 15 to 20% more than in equivalent roles in other cities. The Glassdoor median for DevOps in Bengaluru is around ₹8.15 LPA across all levels, which understates the product company and FAANG ranges significantly. Senior DevOps engineers in Bengaluru at top companies earn ₹40 to 90 LPA.
Hyderabad is close, with strong presence from Microsoft, Amazon, Goldman Sachs, and Walmart. Pay is competitive with Bengaluru.
Delhi NCR has a growing DevOps market, particularly in Gurugram where GCCs and consulting firms cluster. The Glassdoor median for Delhi NCR is around ₹9 LPA across all levels.
Mumbai is relevant primarily for BFSI DevOps roles. Banks and financial institutions have significant infrastructure teams here. Pay for senior DevOps in BFSI roles pushes ₹30 to 55 LPA at mid-to-senior level.
Pune is below Bengaluru and Hyderabad but growing. Good for IT services and mid-tier product company DevOps roles.
Certifications Add Real Money
Cloud certifications are one of the few things on a CV that reliably increase your salary offer rather than just your interview shortlist rate.
AWS certifications (Solutions Architect Professional, DevOps Engineer Professional) add 20 to 35% to base offers for engineers with 2 to 6 years of experience. That is a meaningful number. A mid-level DevOps engineer who picks up an AWS DevOps Professional certification while earning ₹18 LPA often negotiates their next role at ₹22 to 25 LPA on the strength of that credential alone.
Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) is highly valued at product companies and GCCs. Azure Expert Administrator matters in enterprise environments. Google Cloud Professional certifications are worth pursuing if you are targeting Google-adjacent roles or companies running GCP.
The pattern is consistent: certifications matter most in the 2 to 7 year range when you are still building credibility. Above 8 to 10 years, what you have built matters more than what you have certified.
What the Monthly Take-Home Looks Like
At ₹7 LPA: roughly ₹46,000 to 50,000 per month in hand.At ₹12 LPA: roughly ₹77,000 to 82,000 per month.At ₹20 LPA: roughly ₹1.2 to 1.3 lakh per month.At ₹35 LPA: roughly ₹2 to 2.1 lakh per month.At ₹60 LPA: roughly ₹3.2 to 3.4 lakh per month.
Variable pay, stock options, and performance bonuses add meaningfully at senior levels. FAANG total compensation is significantly higher than base salary once RSUs are factored in.
The Skills That Actually Move Your Salary
Two or three years of experience with Linux administration, CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI), Docker, and one cloud platform gets you to the ₹12 to 18 LPA range. That is the base.
Kubernetes fluency, infrastructure as code with Terraform, monitoring and observability (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK), and cloud-native architecture push you to ₹20 to 35 LPA at product companies.
At senior and lead level, the salary difference is less about tool knowledge and more about production credibility. Having owned large-scale incident responses, designed fault-tolerant infrastructure from scratch, and led platform migrations across multiple teams is what moves you into the ₹40 to 90 LPA range.
Where Your Interview Performance Decides the Outcome
Every range in this guide spans a wide gap. The interview is where you decide whether you land at the top or the bottom of the range at your target company.
DevOps interviews at product companies and GCCs test troubleshooting scenarios (a pod is stuck in CrashLoopBackOff, walk me through your diagnosis), infrastructure design questions (design a CI/CD pipeline for a multi-region deployment), Kubernetes architecture, and often Linux internals and scripting.
These are live, watched evaluations. The difference between solving a CrashLoopBackOff problem alone in your terminal and explaining your diagnostic process out loud while someone evaluates you is real.
Mock interviews close that gap. At Intervue.io, DevOps mock interviews are one-on-one with experienced engineers who give you specific feedback on your troubleshooting process, your infrastructure design reasoning, and your communication.
