UI UX Designer Salary in India

Design is one of the more genuinely variable salaries in Indian tech. A UX designer at a small agency and a product designer at a FAANG company are doing related but not identical jobs, and their salaries reflect that gap sharply.

The national average sits around ₹5.5 to 7 LPA across all experience levels on platforms like AmbitionBox and Glassdoor. That number pulls heavily from agencies and smaller companies. At product companies and FAANG India, the same role pays two to three times more.

If you are preparing for a design role at a product company, Intervue.io connects you with experienced designers for one-on-one mock interviews. You get real feedback on your portfolio presentation, your design thinking process, and your communication. Visit intervue.io.

Salary by Experience Level

Fresher (0 to 1 year): ₹2.5 to 5 LPA at most companies. At product startups with strong design cultures, ₹4 to 7 LPA for freshers who have a portfolio with real projects rather than just Figma tutorial work.

Junior designer (1 to 3 years): ₹5 to 9 LPA across most roles. At product companies and funded startups, ₹7 to 12 LPA. The spread at this level comes down almost entirely to portfolio quality and how well you can walk through your design decisions in an interview.

Mid-level (3 to 5 years): ₹9 to 16 LPA at most companies. At product companies and funded startups, ₹12 to 22 LPA. This is where tool fluency alone stops being a differentiator and system thinking, stakeholder communication, and research skills start mattering.

Senior designer (5 to 8 years): ₹16 to 28 LPA at product companies. ₹22 to 35 LPA at top product companies and GCCs. At FAANG India, senior product designers earn ₹30 to 50 LPA.

Lead or principal designer (8+ years): ₹28 to 45 LPA at most companies. Above ₹50 LPA at top product companies and FAANG India. Head of Design and VP Design roles at funded startups and FAANG push total compensation well above ₹60 LPA.

Company Type Changes the Range

Design agencies and studios are where many designers start. Pay is honest but not high. Freshers earn ₹2.5 to 4.5 LPA. Mid-level earns ₹6 to 12 LPA. Senior earns ₹12 to 20 LPA. The upside is breadth: you work across industries and problem types quickly.

IT services companies (TCS, Infosys, Accenture, Wipro, Cognizant) hire designers for client-facing work and internal product redesigns. Freshers start at ₹3.5 to 6 LPA. Mid-level earns ₹7 to 14 LPA. Senior earns ₹14 to 22 LPA. AmbitionBox data shows Accenture and Wipro both averaging around ₹8 to 8.5 LPA for UX designer roles across experience levels.

Product companies and unicorns (Flipkart, Swiggy, Razorpay, PhonePe, CRED, Meesho) are where design salaries get interesting. Mid-level designers earn ₹14 to 25 LPA. Senior designers earn ₹22 to 40 LPA. The work involves owning design for real products with real users, and the interview process reflects that.

GCCs (Walmart Global Tech, Goldman Sachs, Microsoft India, Google India) pay well and the design work is often high-quality. Mid-level earns ₹15 to 28 LPA. Senior earns ₹25 to 45 LPA.

FAANG India pays the most for design talent. Google India and Microsoft India are the two biggest employers of product designers at the highest pay tier. Senior designers earn ₹30 to 50 LPA. Principal and Lead designers push above ₹55 LPA.

City-Wise Differences

Bengaluru leads for design roles. Mid-level UX designers at product companies in Bengaluru earn ₹14 to 25 LPA. The Glassdoor average for UX designers in Bengaluru is around ₹10.5 LPA across all levels.

Gurugram and Delhi NCR are strong for design roles at consulting firms, BFSI companies, and edtech startups. Mid-level earns ₹10 to 20 LPA. Glassdoor places the average for this region at ₹8.8 to 12.9 LPA.

Mumbai pays well for design in BFSI and e-commerce. Mid-level UX designers earn ₹9 to 18 LPA. The Glassdoor median for Mumbai is around ₹5.8 LPA across all levels, which reflects the volume of agency and junior roles in the data.

Pune has a growing design market. Mid-level earns ₹7.7 to 14 LPA.

Tools That Move Your Salary

Figma fluency is the baseline. It is expected at every level above fresher. Not having it in your portfolio at this point is a red flag.

The tools that add salary premium beyond Figma: prototyping for complex interactions (Framer, Principle), design system ownership and management, user research skills that go beyond running a few interviews (usability testing, analytics-based design decisions, A/B test interpretation), and motion design.

AI-native design tools are the newest premium. Designers who are genuinely using AI in their workflow (not just asking ChatGPT for copy) are in higher demand at product companies building AI products. This is early but real.

The single thing that moves salaries most at mid-level and above is not tool knowledge. It is the ability to walk into a room with a PM and an engineer, clearly frame the user problem, defend your design decisions with research and data, and move the conversation toward a decision. That is a communication and thinking skill. It shows in portfolio walkthroughs. It is what senior-level design interviews test.

Monthly Take-Home Reference

At ₹5 LPA: roughly ₹32,000 to 36,000 per month.At ₹9 LPA: roughly ₹58,000 to 62,000 per month.At ₹15 LPA: roughly ₹95,000 to ₹1 lakh per month.At ₹25 LPA: roughly ₹1.5 to 1.55 lakh per month.At ₹40 LPA: roughly ₹2.3 to 2.4 lakh per month.

What Design Interviews Actually Test

Design interviews at product companies test three things that most candidates underestimate until they are in the room.

Portfolio presentation. Not just showing the work but explaining the problem you were solving, what constraints you were working within, what you tried that did not work, and what you would do differently. Interviewers are evaluating your thinking process as much as the output.

Design thinking under a prompt. You will be given a product problem and asked to work through it live. Not Figma, usually verbal or whiteboard. This tests whether your thinking is structured before your execution is beautiful.

Communication and pushback. Senior design interviewers specifically look for how you respond when they challenge a design decision. Do you defend it with reasoning or do you immediately concede? Strong candidates defend when they have a reason and update when the point is valid.

These are skills that develop through practice with real feedback, not by watching portfolio teardowns on YouTube.

At Intervue.io, design mock interviews are one-on-one with experienced product designers who give you specific feedback on your portfolio walk-through, your design reasoning, and your communication. Not generic notes. What specifically was weak and what to do about it.
