TCS Eligibility Criteria: Percentage, Backlogs, Age, Gap Year Explained

TCS receives hundreds of thousands of applications every hiring cycle. To manage volume, they apply a clear set of eligibility filters before any candidate reaches the assessment stage. If you do not meet these criteria, your application is rejected during verification even if you perform well in the test.

This guide gives you the exact criteria, how they apply to each TCS hiring track, and what happens in edge cases like a gap year, a historical backlog that has been cleared, or a borderline percentage.

If you clear eligibility and are preparing for the TCS NQT and interview, Intervue.io connects you with engineers for one-on-one mock interviews so you walk in prepared. Visit intervue.io.

The Core TCS Eligibility Criteria

These five criteria apply to all TCS hiring tracks (Ninja, Digital, and Prime). Meeting all five is required. There is no waiver for any individual criterion.

1. Academic percentage: minimum 60% throughout

The 60% rule applies across all academic milestones: Class 10, Class 12, diploma (if applicable), undergraduate degree, and postgraduate degree (if applicable). The calculation is based on your overall aggregate, not a best-of-subjects approach.

60% is the equivalent of 6.0 CGPA on a 10-point scale. If your college uses a different GPA scale, TCS converts based on the official conversion formula your institution publishes.

One consistent pattern from recent TCS hiring cycles: the 60% rule is applied at verification time, not just at application time. Candidates who had 60% or above at the time of application but whose final semester brought the aggregate below 60% have had offers rescinded. If you are in your final semester, ensure your cumulative aggregate stays above 60%.

2. Active backlogs: maximum 1 at the time of the exam

For on-campus hiring: TCS allows a maximum of 1 active backlog at the time of the NQT exam. Backlogs that you have cleared before the exam date are fine. More than 1 active backlog at exam time disqualifies you.

For off-campus hiring: Zero active backlogs. The policy is stricter for candidates applying through the off-campus route.

Critical distinction: all backlogs must be cleared before joining TCS, not just before the exam. If you are selected with 1 active backlog, you must clear it before your TCS onboarding date or your offer is cancelled.

3. Age limit: 18 to 28 years

The age band is 18 to 28 years at the time of application. There is no relaxation. No category-based age extension. No exceptions for candidates who took longer to complete their degree.

This is a firm ceiling. Candidates above 28 are not eligible regardless of academic performance.

4. Education gap: maximum 2 years total

Any gap between completing Class 12 and completing your graduation must not exceed 2 years in total. A gap between Class 10 and Class 12 is not counted separately but a gap between graduation and postgraduation can come up in verification.

Gaps due to medical reasons are sometimes accepted with documentation, but TCS does not publish a formal policy on this. The standard filter is a maximum 2-year gap.

5. Degree type: full-time from a recognised institution

TCS accepts full-time degrees only. Part-time degrees, correspondence degrees, and distance education degrees do not qualify. The institution must be recognised by AICTE, UGC, or an equivalent statutory body.

Eligible Degree Types and Streams

For engineering and technology roles:B.E. / B.Tech in any discipline. M.E. / M.Tech in Computer Science, IT, and circuital branches (CSE, IT, ECE, EEE). MCA. M.Sc in Computer Science or Information Technology.

Non-circuital M.Tech branches (mechanical, civil, chemical) are eligible for B.Tech entry but M.Tech candidates from these branches are typically not considered for the technical tracks.

For non-engineering roles at TCS (BPS, operations, analytics): B.Com, BBA, B.Sc, B.A. with mathematics or statistics background. These candidates go through a separate hiring track with different assessment criteria.

All engineering branches are eligible. CSE and IT have historically had higher shortlist rates because TCS's work is predominantly software. However, ECE, EEE, mechanical, and civil engineers are eligible to apply and do get selected.

The Three Tracks and Their Specific Criteria

TCS Ninja (standard track)

The Ninja track has no criteria beyond the core five listed above. All eligible candidates who register for the TCS NQT can attempt the Ninja assessment. Selection is based on NQT performance. Package: ₹3.36 LPA.

TCS Digital

Same eligibility criteria as Ninja. No additional academic cutoff to apply. The Digital track is unlocked by performance in the Advanced Coding section of the NQT, not by eligibility at application time. Candidates who clear the Advanced Coding cutoff are considered for Digital regardless of stream. Package: ₹7 to 7.3 LPA.

TCS Prime

Same eligibility criteria. Selective from specific high-ranked campuses. Not available through the off-campus or NQT open registration route. Package: ₹9 to 11.5 LPA.

The key insight: meeting eligibility is a gate, not a differentiator. Every candidate who meets the five criteria passes through the same gate. What differentiates you is your NQT performance after the gate.

Edge Cases: What Actually Happens

What if my 10th or 12th percentage is below 60% but my graduation aggregate is above? Your application is rejected. The 60% rule applies to each milestone independently, not as an average across all milestones. A 59% in Class 10 is a disqualifier regardless of what your graduation aggregate is.

What if I have cleared all my backlogs but they appear on my transcript? Cleared backlogs do not disqualify you. TCS's criteria are about active (uncleared) backlogs. A transcript showing historical backlogs that have been passed is acceptable. Declare this honestly in the application because verification will pick it up anyway.

What if I have a gap year due to preparation for competitive exams? Gaps for UPSC, CAT, or other competitive exam preparation are among the most common scenarios. TCS's 2-year gap policy does not distinguish between types of gaps. If the total gap is within 2 years, you are eligible. If your gap explanation is requested at interview or verification, be prepared to answer it honestly.

What if my college uses a CGPA system and I am not sure if I meet 60%? Use your institution's official conversion chart. Most institutions publish CGPA to percentage conversion on their official website. On a standard 10-point scale, 6.0 CGPA = 60%. On a 4-point scale (common in some universities), the conversion is institution-specific.

What if my final semester result is still awaited? You can apply with provisional eligibility. TCS allows candidates from pass-out batches to apply while results are pending. If selected, your final result must confirm 60% aggregate before onboarding.

What if I am from the 2021 or 2022 batch (previous years)? TCS primarily targets current year and immediately preceding batch candidates. For earlier batches, the off-campus route is available but has stricter criteria including zero backlogs and typically a higher NQT score requirement for shortlisting.

The TCS NQT: What Happens After Eligibility

Clearing eligibility gets you to the NQT registration. The NQT itself has two assessment components that determine which track you are shortlisted for.

The core NQT sections (cognitive assessment, verbal reasoning, and a coding section) are evaluated for the Ninja track shortlist. The difficulty is moderate. Standard quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, and verbal ability preparation is sufficient.

The Advanced Coding section is evaluated separately for the Digital track shortlist. This section tests programming skills at a higher difficulty than the core coding section. Candidates who clear the Advanced Coding cutoff are considered for Digital packages.

Both sections happen in the same examination session. There is no separate application or separate test date for Digital versus Ninja.

After the NQT, shortlisted candidates proceed to an interview stage covering technical fundamentals (data structures, OOP, DBMS, networking), a coding problem, and an HR interview.

The interview is the stage most shortlisted candidates are least prepared for. Reading about data structures is different from explaining them clearly to an interviewer who is evaluating whether you can work at TCS. Mock interviews close that gap.

At Intervue.io, you can practice one-on-one with a real engineer who gives you specific feedback on your technical communication, your code walkthrough clarity, and your HR round answers.

FAQs

What is the minimum percentage required for TCS? 60% aggregate across Class 10, Class 12, and graduation. This applies to all three TCS hiring tracks (Ninja, Digital, Prime). There is no relaxation.

Can students with backlogs apply for TCS? For on-campus hiring: yes, with a maximum of 1 active backlog at the time of the exam. For off-campus hiring: no active backlogs allowed. All backlogs must be cleared before joining regardless of when you were selected.

What is the TCS age limit for freshers? 18 to 28 years at the time of application. No exceptions and no relaxations.

Is there a difference in eligibility criteria between TCS Ninja and TCS Digital? No. The academic eligibility criteria are identical for both tracks. The differentiator is your NQT score, specifically the Advanced Coding section score which determines Digital shortlisting.

Can engineering students from all branches apply for TCS? Yes. All B.E. / B.Tech branches are eligible for the Ninja and Digital tracks. MCA and M.Sc CS/IT candidates are also eligible.

What happens if my percentage drops below 60% in the final semester after I receive a TCS offer? Your offer is at risk. TCS verifies final academic records before onboarding. If your final aggregate falls below 60%, TCS can cancel the offer. This has happened to candidates in recent cycles.

How can I prepare for a TCS interview? Along with preparing data structures, OOP, DBMS, networking, coding questions, and HR answers, take a mock interview on Intervue.io with an experienced engineer who is familiar with service-based company interviews. You can practise explaining your approach, walking through your code, and answering technical and HR questions while getting specific feedback before your TCS interview.
